Dustin is a principal and founder of Framework Engineering, calling on experience in Building, Engineering Design, and Materials Testing.

Specializing in high-end wood-frame buildings in the seismically-active San Francisco Bay Area, Dustin's approach to structural design emphasizes maintaining the architectural intent of the designer, striving to realize practical and economical structural solutions to elegant building design. For residential or commercial construction, for new or existing buildings, Dustin enjoys working with architects, owners, and contractors to predict detailing conflicts and construction problems before they arise.

For repair, remodel or additions to existing structures, this frequently means a physical presence on site to recognize the differences between construction drawings and built conditions. Dustin isn't afraid of tight spaces, dark crawlspaces, or high attics to capture important structural information - and can often be found somewhere dirty with a flashlight.

BEFORE FRAMEWORK

Dustin is a connections expert, having designed and overseen thousands of materials and connector test setups under various loading conditions as a Research & Development Engineer for Simpson Strong-Tie. He has an intimate knowledge in a range of structural wood connector products and truss plates, their performance, and test standards; with other work in fasteners, anchors, cold-formed steel connectors, and fiber reinforced polymer. He is listed on several patents for his intellectual contributions in these areas and continues to enjoy the challenges and fine details of working with connections.

He also has a background in the field. Raised in a California construction household, he worked as an apprentice framer every summer through high school and college under the tutelage of his father and older brother at Muhn & Sons Inc. Dustin credits these years and lessons for his understanding of the building industry, the importance of relationships and integrity, and in taking extreme pride in one's work.

Armed with direct experience building woodframe structures, an intimate understanding of connector performance, and a balance of architectural and engineering degrees, Dustin is well-equipped for the technical challenges of structural engineering and seismic design.
